Stephanie Marzella

Stephanie Marzella has been a painter of landscape and still life since receiving her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1984. After many years on the New England coast, Stephanie relocated to the thriving arts community of Charleston, South Carolina where she has enjoyed discovering the endless inspiration that the low country offers painters.

The driving forces behind Stephanie's work are her love of nature and her interpretive use of color. "I love the live oaks and this southern landscape that feels so mysterious to me; it's exciting discovering where this experience is taking my work.  I've started incorporating more texture in my paintings since moving here. I love interpreting the tidal coves, quiet reflective water and ever changing skies; painting my emotional response to a scene rather than exactly what I see."  All of Marzella's pieces begin with a tonal sepia under painting which establishes the composition, value and mood.  Many, many layers of transparent color glazes are added giving the finished piece jewel like tones and an ethereal feeling.  Her work has both a contemporary feel as well as a timeless quality.  "By creating mood and atmosphere in my oil paintings I hope to awaken emotions in the hearts and minds of the viewer," Marzella says.

Stephanie paints predominantly in oils but enjoys many different media including pastels and acrylics. She enjoys reading and collecting antique art books and building her reference library. She has most recently been influenced by George Inness the American Tonalists artists of the late 19th and early 20th century and their strong connection with New England.

Marzella has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the country and has won many awards.  Most recently she received The John N. Lewis Memorial Award, The Emil Carlsen Award, and an invitation to join the prestigious Salmagundi Club in NY, and winning the Annual Purchase Prize Award from The Salmagundi Club in the same year.
